The Four Temperaments

Claudius Galen, a Roman Philosopher and physician, formulated the concept of personality types utilizing the works from Greek theory of humourism in attempt to explain the human body illustrated in the diagram. This showed the behavioral element that if one humor develops excessively; then the corresponding types of personality begins to dominate. However, according to Galen, imbalance of humor properties could occur in people. For example, those with too much fire energy in human expression - blood, would release. Galen concept began to form a doctrine which dominated the medical ideas.

The temperaments of personality were surrounded by four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. These can be found in the corresponding humors that affect the functioning of a body.
