Getting to know the data

Getting to know the data is a question many people ask and question how do we start to intelligently examine values. Background information is required and therefore numbers on their own is meaningless. Taking numbers at face value is wrong as misleading results can be derived. The need to take into account the unit measurement for interpretation is important in order to understand the variance and accuracy of the data. The use of standard deviations, variables are standardized  meaning transformation of original data to represent how far they are situated away from the mean of a normal distribution. The distribution of data expresses the pattern of variation of a variable. In summary, to get to know the data, the following 4 questions are key areas to ask:
  • What variables are being measured?
  • What are the types of variables?
  • What unit of measurement is being used?
  • How are they being measured?
